What is Basilar Invagination?

Basilar Invagination (BI) is a condition where the top of the spine moves up and presses into the base of the skull. It causes narrowing of the skull opening where the spinal cord passes through to the brain. This causes pinching of the brain stem, the bundle of nerves that connects the brain to the spinal cord.

What are the causes of Basilar Invagination?

This condition is a result of either problem with the bones in the neck or abnormal flattening of the bottom of the skull.

The condition can either be congenital or developed over time due to injury of a bone, connecting tissue, immune or endocrine disorder.

What are the signs and symptoms of Basilar Invagination?

Basilar Invagination (BI) causes various symptoms depending on where in the brain the peg presses. There are several common symptoms –

Pain in the back of the head and upper neck
Weakness in the neck
Feeling lightheaded, confused and dizzy
The problem in talking or swallowing the food
Numbness, paralysis of limbs
Shock in the back on bending the neck and problem passing urine.
How is the diagnosis of basilar invagination done?

Healthcare Specialists in Neurology, Neurosurgery, and Spine surgery will carry out an examination based on symptoms, checking muscles and nerves all over the body. X-Ray, Computer Tomography (CT) scan, and MRI will be carried out for detailed examination and establish the diagnosis.

What treatments for basilar invagination are available?

Mild symptoms can be treated with anti-inflammatory medicines or a cervical collar. If the symptoms are severe causing nerve problems, neck instability, severe numbness, or paralysis, surgery might be recommended by the healthcare provider. The surgery may include the operation from the front through the neck, mouth, nose, or through back of the head and neck.
