What are the causes of Cervical Stenosis?

This condition mostly occurs in age 50 and above, due to age the shape and size of the spinal canal starts to change. Aging process can cause building of the discs and can also lead to destruction of tissues. These conditions are responsible for narrowing the spinal canal hence the spinal stenosis. Some other causes are-

Heniated discs
Injuries
Tumors
What are the signs, symptoms, and complications of cervical stenosis?

Spinal stenosis falls into two categories Cervical stenosis where the neck area of spine is affected  and second is Lumbar stenosis where the lower back area of spine is narrowing. Unless the spinal cord or nerves get compressed and become squeezed, the patient doesn’t have any symptoms.  Some specific symptoms are:

Stiffness, numbness and pain in neck, shoulders, arms and hands.
Painful leg weakness usually makes a foot drop.
Loss of blader or bowel control
Balance and coordination problem.
How is the diagnosis of cervical stenosis done?

The doctor will go through a complete medical history of the patient and will examine neck movements causing pain, numbness or weakness. Then depending on the condition  the doctor will suggest to have an X-ray, MRI or CT scan.

What are the treatments of cervical stenosis available?

The treatment a patient needs for spinal stenosis depends on where the stenosis is and how severe the symptoms are. patients might need over the counter pain medications, antidepressants, muscle relaxants, anti-seizure medications and corticosteroids injections. If the condition is serious, the doctor may recommend the surgery.
