Hemangioma

What is hemangioma?

A hemangioma is a red birthmark that appears at birth or within the first week or two of life. It’s formed up of additional blood vessels in the skin and looks like a rubbery mass.

Hemangiomas can appear anywhere on the body, although they’re most frequent on the face, scalp, chest, and back. A baby’s hemangioma (infantile hemangioma) typically does not require treatment because it disappears over time; by the age of ten, a child who has had this syndrome since infancy usually has minimal visual evidence of the growth. However, if a hemangioma interferes with your ability to see, breathe, or perform other functions, you should seek therapy.

Other internal hemangiomas may also cause growths. These have an impact on internal organs like:

  • the liver
  • other parts of the gastrointestinal system
  • the brain
  • organs of the respiratory system
What are the hemangioma symptoms?

Hemangiomas usually do not produce symptoms during or after their creation, depending on their location and size. However, if they develop large or sensitive or several hemangiomas, they may have symptoms.

What is the hemangioma diagnosis treatment available?

Hemangiomas on the organs may only be spotted during an imaging test, such as:

  • Ultrasound
  • MRI
  • CT scan
What are treatments for hemangioma available?

The majority of hemangiomas fade away without therapy over time. However, if the hemangioma is causing discomfort, there are several treatment options available. Microsurgery is considered as the gold standard for excision of the hemangiomas and in a few selected cases, Stereotactic Radiosurgery procedures such as Gamma knife and Cyberknife are also equally effective.
