Pituitary Adenoma

What is Pituitary Adenoma?

Pituitary adenomas (tumors) are the most prevalent growth affiliated with the pituitary gland; they account for 15% of primary brain tumors and are the third most common intracranial tumor after meningiomas and gliomas.

The majority of pituitary adenomas are slow-growing and benign. However, as they grow in size, they can pressure surrounding structures, such as the nerves connecting the eyes to the brain, causing symptoms.

What causes pituitary adenomas?

Pituitary adenomas have an unknown cause. Some, however, have been related to unintentional changes in DNA. These changes can cause pituitary cells to become abnormal and grow uncontrollably, resulting in a tumor. The changes can be carried down from parents to children (heredity), but they usually occur on their own at some point in a person’s life.
