Tuberculosis of the Spine

What is Tuberculosis of the spine?

Spinal Tuberculosis, also widely recognized as Pott’s disease or tuberculous spondylitis, is an uncommon infectious disease that causes the vertebrae to collapse, resulting in a deformity or kyphosis, i.e., a hunchback.

Bone tuberculosis begins in the vertebrae and gradually spreads to neighboring areas. Tuberculosis is most commonly caused by infectious bacteria – Mycobacterium tuberculosis that infect the lungs. If left untreated, it can apply to the spine and end up causing spinal arthritis.

When the infection spreads to two adjacent joints, the spinal disc receives fewer nutrients and degrades. As a result, when a disc collapses, the vertebrae narrow and collapse, causing spinal cord damage. If not treated, this condition can result in nerve damage, paralysis, and back deformities.

What are the symptoms of Spinal Tuberculosis?

Chronic illness, malaise, night sweats, weight loss, and back pain are all symptoms of chronic illness. Back pain is frequently a delayed symptom that shows up only after substantial boney destruction and deformity.

What are the best treatments for Spinal Tuberculosis?

Spinal Tuberculosis necessarily requires a treatment plan that may last six months to a year. The treatment time frame is determined by the doctor’s assessment and is frequently personalized based on the individual patient’s health.

What are the operations/ surgical treatments available for Spinal Tuberculosis?

In spinal Tuberculosis, the intervertebral disc space and adjacent vertebral bodies are destroyed, the spinal elements collapse, and anterior wedging occurs, resulting in the characteristic angulation and gibbus formation.

Spinal Tuberculosis, also famous as Pott’s Disease, is a tuberculosis-caused spinal infection.

A CT-guided biopsy sent for acid-fast bacilli is used to make the diagnosis.

In the absence of neurological defects and mechanical instability, bracing and anti-tuberculosis antibiotics are usually used to treat the patient.
